| Our
Passion: Tropical Fish |

In
our spare time we have developed a hobby in the form of Tropical Fish.
It started small, as most hobbies do, but over the last few months
has taken over our living quarters!
Over the autumn/winter period we caught the bug and bought our first
tank. It was a 50 pence shaped 5 gallon to become home to two goldfish
that our daughter won at the Fair. |
It
was no time at all before two more arrived to keep them company, and
then more, and more, and more. A new 2 foot tank was needed, so our
local pet shop sold us one, along with the air pump, gravel, heater
and everything else it needed. We cleared some space on a unit and
set it up with our first tropical fish, and the goldfish went in there
too!
Then the bug really took hold. We wanted more fish and the two tanks
couldn't hold them all, so it had to be a 4 foot tank this time. My
health also took a dive and I found that the fish were so relaxing
I spent hours watching them and fussing over them. |

We
were just chatting about them one day when the comment came out about
how great it would be to have tanks all round the room.
What an idea! I couldn't stop thinking about it, and worked on the
idea. Ordinary tank were too deep for a shelf and too heavy to support,
so I made some phone calls and found a supplier that would build custom
tanks for me. I gave him the sizes and numbers of tanks I needed and
the mould was cast.
So off we went to the builders Merchants to get some timber. and I
started work building the shelves to hold the tanks, all six of them! |
It
took me nearly two weeks to build the unit. It included lighting and
air supplies, access and splash guards. Finally I could sit down and
admire the work, and imagine what it would look like with the tanks,
which were still being made.
The next week was torture, waiting for the call to say the tanks were
ready. Finally it came and we shot off to collect them. Two days later,
all six were set up and running, albeit without any livestock.
Over the following two weeks we started to stock the tanks and now
have over 70 fish of many different types, but have more still to
find!
